Overview | The long-span Old Kohryu-bridge was replaced with a new bridge because it had a narrow carriage way and no sidewalk, its ratio of large vehicle traffic volume was 56%, and, due to its age, the durability was poor. The pier position and direction of the bridge were decided considering the impacts due to the bridge’s location near the merging of the Ishikari and Uryu Rivers. A pneumatic caisson method was applied for 6 of the 7 foundations due to the comparative quality of the ground conditions, and the superstructure was constructed using the cantilever method during the winter. Seismic isolation bearings were also adopted to improve the seismic performance.
